I can’t play to this day
When I was growing up as a child, I think of my grandfather’s chess sets. He was genuinely good at playing chess and also genuinely just loved playing chess. He would sit down with me at the dining room table and teach me the positions of all the pieces and the movements, patiently permitting me to lift up and move the men even when it wasn’t my round.
He owned at least ten different chess sets in his collection. He had sets formed of pewter, marble, wood and plastic to list a few. My favorite of his chess sets was the one that was constructed of marble. It was made of black marble pieces and set up on its own black marble playing board.
The pieces were so massive to me and cold to the touch. I remember putting them on my forehead when I would get hot and my grandpa would just bellow laughing at me. I have a great deal of good memories surrounding the game of chess, and I can’t play to this day.
